Albert H. Wenzel, 90, of Streetsboro, died Tuesday, January 23, 2018, concluding what his family considers to have been a wonderful life.Albert was born March 5, 1927, in Meadville, Pa., the son of Harold Wenzel and Eva Holbrook Wenzel. His parents, his sister, Virginia Walton, and his brother, Franklin Wenzel, died before him. He married three times and became a widower twice. His wed his first wife, Mary Jeanne Galvin, the mother of his four children, on May 13, 1950. She died on June 5, 1975. He wed his second wife, Garnet Haddox, on October 1, 1977. She died on February 9, 2007. His third wife, Joyce Gundock, whom he married on March 1, 2012, survives. Among surviving family members are daughters Deborah Wenzel of Cuyahoga Falls, Diane (Andrew) Fountain of Diamond, Judith (Todd) Puster of Streetsboro, and son Keith (Jinny) Wenzel of Stow. He has eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He also is survived by step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Albert was considered by his family to be a man who never met a stranger in spite of the ups and downs of life. His father died when he was eight. Yet, by age 12, he was working as a caddy at a golf course in the Meadville area. He developed a lifelong love of golf from that first job; he played regularly for the next 75 years.  He enlisted in the United States Army in 1945 while a senior at Meadville High School. During his service in Europe in World War II, the Army recognized him for excellence as a sharpshooter. Following his discharge from the service, he returned to Meadville and earned his high school diploma. For the next 18 years, as Albert started raising his family, he worked industrial jobs in the Meadville area, helped on his stepfather’s turkey farm, and sold cheese at a local farmer’s market.  Albert moved his family to a farmhouse in Streetsboro in 1964 when he took a job inspecting steel at the Chrysler stamping plant in Twinsburg. In 1971, he purchased a farmhouse on Page Road and 12 surrounding acres. In 1979, he built a home on the back seven acres of the property. He retired from Chrysler with more than two decades of service. In retirement, Albert kept active. In fact, he quipped that he was so busy that he didn’t know how he had time to work before retirement. He wintered in Florida, first in Fort Pierce, later in Fruitland Park. He also enjoyed gardening, bowling and reading Western novels. He was an avid card player, enjoying poker, euchre and pinochle. He played his last pinochle game on January 6. The Shorts-Spicer-Crislip Funeral Home, 9781 Page Road, Streetsboro, Ohio, is handling funeral arrangements. Calling hours are 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, and 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 26. A service will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 26, with United Methodist Deacon Sue Ritts officiating.
