Bernard “Red” Taylor
1923-2017
In the early morning hours of November 16, 2017, Red Taylor, age 94, peacefully went to be with his Lord in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loved ones. Red was born in Ridgeville Township, Ohio on September 27, 1923 to Josephine (Maur) and Bernard Patrick Taylor. He graduated from Ravenna High School in the class of 1941. At age 19, he entered the service of his country and served more than two years in the Army Communications and Signal Corp, seeing action in the European Theatre during World War II. Upon his Honorable Discharge, Red continued his employment with E.H. Grey Electric in Ravenna, later becoming a member of the IBEW Local Union #306.
Red was married for 64 years to Shirley M. (Corbett) Taylor of Palmyra, Ohio. They were married on July 23, 1953 in the Chapel in the Garden, Angola, Indiana. Red was a member of the Bethel Chapel and the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Ravenna. Because he especially loved children, Red served as a leader in the Christian Service Brigade and taught Sunday School with his wife for many years. He was also a Commissioner for Pee-Wee Football and a coach for Little League Baseball in Portage County. He also had a special love for his dog and close companion, Cavus. Red was a man of integrity who lived true to his Christian beliefs to the end.
Red will be greatly missed by his wife, Shirley (Corbett) Taylor, his children, Patricia (David) Trow of Ravenna, Linda Taylor of Elkhart, Indiana, and John Taylor of Yadkinville, North Carolina. Red always enjoyed his grandchildren, Joel (Kristin) Stair of San Diego, California, David (Alison) Stair of Nappanee, Indiana, Kerstin (Tyler) Pakka of Perrysburg, Ohio, Lindsey Trow of Ravenna, Ohio, Sean Taylor of Columbia, Maryland, and Nathaniel Taylor of Westfield Center, Ohio. Great-grandchildren Alec and Charles Pakka and Jack Stair were all dearly loved by their Grandpa “Opa.” He leaves fond memories with his sister, Norma, of Florida as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, too many to mention.
Red is preceded in death by his beloved son, Richard (Katie) Taylor, his parents, his siblings, Harold Taylor, Lillian (Taylor) Fedor, June (Taylor) Cornelius, Francis Ziska, and Edward Ziska.
