Eleanor F. Martin 91, died peacefully at her home after a long illness surrounded by much of her family. She was born January 16, 1926 in Ravenna, Ohio to Hubert and Margaret (Wise) Knapp. A lifelong resident of Ravenna and member of Immaculate Conception Church, she graduated from Ravenna High School and Bohecker's School of Business. She worked for the Brian Jones Agency and later for the Auditor's Department at the County Courthouse. In September of 1947 Eleanor Florence Knapp married George Edward Martin and they remained together for over 50 years until George's death in 1998. In association with the Portage County Board MRDD she organized the annual Christmas dances for teens and adults with developmental disabilities at the Elks Club. Eleanor was a member of the Portage County Garden Club. She and her husband George were ballroom dancers and spent countless happy hours at the Idora Park Ballroom in Youngstown and dancing in Akron. Survivors include her daughters Susan (David) Walters, Ann (Bob) Smith, Jane (Wayne) Schaefer and Cheryl Brainard, grandchildren Emily, Claire, Christian Walters, William (Buddy) and Daniel King and siblings Walter, Richard and Dennis Knapp, Jeanne Casamento and Margaret Lynch. Calling hours will be from 1 PM to 4 PM Sunday, September 17, 2017 at Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, September 18, 2017 at Immaculate Conception Church. Father William Kraynak will officiate. Entombment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Ravenna. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials to UH Portage Hospice, 6847 N. Chestnut Street, Ravenna, Ohio 44266 or the Center of Hope, 1034 W. Main Street, Ravenna, Ohio 44266.
