Dr. Robert Evans Roy, 91, beloved husband of Betty ((Shiffer) Roy, loving father of Rob (Renee) Roy and Pat (Matt) Eisenberg, grandfather of 6 and great grandfather of 10, passed away on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Ravenna. He was born June 29, 1926 in Bellaire, Ohio to Robert J. and Isa M. (Evans) Roy. He graduated from Hiram College in 1947, Western Reserve School of Medicine in 1949 and married his wife of 69 years, Betty. He completed his training in Internal Medicine at Cleveland City Hospital in 1952. Dr. Roy was then called to active duty with the US Navy and served as a Medical Officer on the USS Baltimore and at the Armed Forces Examining Station in Philadelphia, PA. After his discharge from the Navy, Dr. Roy was appointed to the medical staff at Robinson Memorial Hospital in 1954 and established his practice in Ravenna sharing offices with Drs. E.A. and W.B. Webb. He also served as the Ravenna Arsenal physician for many years. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. At Robinson Memorial Hospital, Dr. Roy served as the Chairman of various committees, including Medical Records and Library (1965), Accreditation/Bylaws/Credentials (1975 & 1979), Pharmacy (1984 & 1985), Internal Medicine Section (1974 & 1975), Emergency Department (1980 & 1981), and as President of the Medical Staff in 1959 & 1970. After retiring in November 1997, he transferred to the Honorary Staff and was an active member of the Board of Trustees of the Robinson Memorial Hospital Foundation. During his career, Dr. Roy served for eight years on the Board of Governors of the Shriner's Hospital in Erie, PA and also as President of the Portage County Medical Society. He presented programs for the American Heart Association and served as President of the Portage County Heart Association in 1957 and 1958, President of the Akron District Heart Association, as Trustee and President of the Ohio State Heart Association, and as a delegate to the National American Heart Association and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio State Heart Association. Dr. Roy was President of the Ravenna Kiwanis Club, was on the Board of Directors for the Oak Rubber Company, and a member of the Hiram College Planned Giving Committee. He served on various committees at the First United Methodist Church of Ravenna and participated in the effort to implement the extension of water lines to the McElrath area of Ravenna. As a member of the Band Of Ancient Retired Doctors (B.O.A.R.D.), he assisted in establishing the Gallery of Distinguished Physicians at Robinson Memorial Hospital in 2000. In his retirement years, Dr. Roy enjoyed golfing and traveling. At his request, Dr. Roy will be laid to rest at a private service in Maple Grove Cemetery.
