Arthur Edwards Jr., "Art", "Papa Door"

Arthur Edwards Jr., “Art”, “Papa Door”, age 91 of Rootstown, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. He was born December 16, 1934 in Akron, Ohio to the late Arthur Sr. and Annabelle Edwards.

Art dedicated many years of his life to education, beginning his teaching career with Springfield Schools in Akron, Ohio, and later retiring from Kent City Schools. Throughout his career, he taught OWE and physical education while also coaching football and track. Art received numerous recognitions for his dedication to teaching and was inducted into several Halls of Fames for his coaching accomplishments. He was a wonderful mentor to countless youth and young adults, always willing to guide, encourage, and help others in any way he could.

Art was a man of integrity who lived by his faith and demonstrated the fruits of the Spirit throughout his life. He was a devoted member of Ravenna First Church of God, where he taught Sunday School, served as a youth leader and held several leadership positions within the church.

Outside of his professional and church life, Art enjoyed gardening and especially loved attending and cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events. His faith, dedication to others, and love for his family was evident in everything he did throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 plus years, Shirley and sister, Lavonne Simms.

Art is survived by his children. Linda (Floyd) Martell, Pam (Robert) Luli and David (Athena) Edwards; ten grandchildren, Stacey (Brian) Smith, Jacob (Becky) Martell, Lisa (Steven) Sexton, Michelle (Mike) Trickett, Megan (James) McNamee, Raymond (Jamie) Luli, Gregory (Ashley) Luli, Benjamin (Lauren) Edwards, Melissa (Daniel) Underwood and Steven (Alison) Edwards; 17 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 14, 2026 at Ravenna First Church of God, 237 New Milford Rd. Ravenna, Ohio 44266 from 10am to 11am with a celebration of Art’s life to follow at 11am with Pastor Tod Huston officiating.
