Burdette R. "Burt" DeVos, 80 of Shalersville passed away Saturday, May 28, 2011, at his home. He was born June 3, 1930, in Shalersville, to the late Rudolph and Ottje (DeBoer) DeVos who immigrated from the Netherlands. He lived his whole life at the family home in Shalersville. On Sept. 12, 1959, he married his beloved wife Carol (Christensen) DeVos and raised 3 children (Gary, Deborah, and Gregory). Burt enjoyed traveling by camper and visited all 50 states with his wife. His favorite trip being a 9 week drive thru Canada to Alaska. Burt cherished his time spent with his beloved family and friends. Burt worked on the family celery farm thru 1954 and worked on the J.R. Sensibar ore carrier on the Great Lakes. He graduated from Shalersville High School. Later he joined the Army and was in the Armored Division from 1955 - 1957. He was employed at Carlon Products for 8 years and at Custom Plastics where he retired in 1995 after 29 years. Burt and his wife owned and operated the DeVos Greenhouse for 40 years where they raised corn, pumpkins, and bedding plants. In his retirement years he enjoyed maintaining and mowing the property and being active with the Shalersville Historical Society. He is survived by his wife Carol, and Children, Gary (Terry) DeVos of Stow, Deborah (Tony) Stylianou of Concord, NC, Gregory (Micki) DeVos of Shalersville, grandchildren, Maggie and Daniel DeVos, Nikolas and Christina Stylianou, step-grandchildren, Todd (Jackie) Kinsey, Raymond and Brittany Bott, Emily and Patrick Butcher, Niece Marie (Stan) Adamcewicz of Statesville, NC, and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Gertrude Ingram and Alice Clark. Calling hours will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 PM Friday, June 3, 2011 at the Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 4, 2011 with Chaplain Robert Grow officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery Shalersville following the service.
