Daniel E. King passed away peacefully at home on January 23, 2011. Daniel was born to the late Ralph and Harriet (Wheeler) King on February 29, 1928 in Akron. At age 5, his family moved to Charlestown Twp., where "Danny" graduated from Charlestown High in 1946. On November 4, 1946, he enlisted in the Army. After training as a parachutist, he became a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne stationed in Sapporo, Japan. Upon discharge, Dan began working in the carpentry trade. He retired as a construction superintendent with Zamis Construction, Johnstown, PA. After retiring, Dan enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports, rarely missing and event. He also enjoyed gathering with Charlestown School alumni at monthly luncheons. Always interested in aeronautics, he was thrilled to fly on the Spirit of Goodyear blimp, to celebrate his 20th Leap Year birthday in 2008. Survivors include his children, Karen King of Sugar Land, Texas, Kathleen Griffiths of Signal Hill, CA, Carol Watts of Placentia, CA, Kristie (Keith) Gowens of Rootstown, Ron King of Paris Twp., and Amy (Chris) Dyer of Palmyra Twp.; 14 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his siblings Paul and John David King, and Doris Lang. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 6-8 PM at Shorts-Spicer-Crislip Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be held on Friday at 10 AM. Cremation to follow.
