Dennis B Simmons

"TOGETHER AGAIN" Dennis B. Simmons, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, was born October 10, 1943, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He was a man whose life was defined by strength, perseverance, generosity, and an unwavering love for his family and the people around him. Dennis was the beloved husband of Sandra Simmons. Together, they shared nearly 44 years of marriage before Sandra passed away on November 18, 2015, just one day before their 44th wedding anniversary. Their love and the life they built together remained an important part of Dennis’s heart throughout the years. Dennis was the proud father of three daughters: Shirley Wytovak of Texas; Shannon (Doug) Moore of Atwater; and Sonya (Kevin) Moore of Atwater. He was the best dad his daughters could have ever asked for. Dennis had a gift for knowing when something was wrong without his daughters ever having to say a word. He could simply look at their faces and know that something was bothering them. And when they needed him, he was there. For every occasion, every difficult moment, and every time they simply needed their dad, Dennis showed up. He was a cherished grandfather to Cody, Savannah, Skylar, Chance, and Brandon, and a proud great-grandfather to Gage, Stella, and Axel. But Dennis’s love for children and family didn’t stop there. He was affectionately known as Grandpa to everyone, because he had a way of making people feel like they belonged to him. Dennis had a heart that seemed to have room for everyone. He helped anyone he could and never turned someone away. If someone needed a roof over their head, a helping hand, or someone to count on, Dennis was there. He gave freely and expected nothing in return. His home and his heart were always open. Dennis was the strongest man his family had ever known. Throughout his life, he faced more than his share of challenges and health struggles, yet he continued to fight, overcome, and move forward. His strength and determination were an inspiration to everyone who loved him. Dennis proudly served in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1967. Following his military service, he spent many years as a truck driver, including driving for Consolidated Freightways . He drove over nearly 3 million miles . He was really was proud of that. He enjoyed the outdoors and the simple things in life. He was an avid deer hunter and especially loved talking about the hunting memories he made with his son-in-law, Kevin. Those stories and adventures were memories he treasured. He loved watching football, especially his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers. He enjoyed planting gardens, brush hogging, and mowing. And then there was Gunner, his faithful dog who was never far from his side. Gunner had a particularly special place in Dad’s heart—and apparently the rule was simple: whatever Dad ate, Gunner ate too. These are the little things his family will remember. The stories. The hunting trips. The football games. The gardens. The mowing. The look on his face when he knew one of his girls needed him. The people he helped. The countless times he showed up. And, of course, Gunner right beside him. Dennis was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra Simmons; his mother, Clarice Daughenbaugh; his father, Arthur Daughenbaugh; his birth father, Kenneth Simmons, who passed away just a few months before Dennis was born; and his brother, Gary Simmons. He leaves behind his three daughters, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and countless people whose lives he touched simply by being the kind of man who never turned someone away. Dennis spent his life taking care of people. He was a protector, a provider, a fighter, and a man who could always be counted on. But above all, he was Dad. To his daughters, he was the man who could read their hearts with one look. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was their Grandpa. To many others, he was the person who gave them a place to turn when they had nowhere else to go. He will be deeply missed, forever carried in the hearts of those who knew him, and remembered in every story, every tradition, and every life he made better.
