Edward L Hunt, Sr.

January 27, 1930 — May 25, 2021

Deerfield

Edward L. Hunt, Sr. 91, passed away May 25th after a year of declining health.  Ed was born and lived in Deerfield for 87 of his 91 years.   Raised on a farm just outside Alliance, he was one of 6 (and the last surviving) children born at home to Roy and Harriet (Baer) Hunt on January 27, 1930.  He attended Deerfield School, graduating as president of his 12 member senior class.  Ed was proud of the fact that he played all the sports offered and quarterbacked his 6 man football team to a Portage County Football championship.  On July 23rd, 1948, he married Evelyn (Walker) Hunt, the love of his life from the moment he first set eyes on her in the second grade at Deerfield Elementary.  Working at several Alliance factories, he apprenticed and became a Master Plumber, spending the majority of his career at Cardinal Plumbing and Heating of Sebring, Ohio.  Serving as a foreman, he worked on  numerous Alliance and northeastern Ohio construction projects, including but not limited to: additions to Alliance City Hospital, Mt Union College dorms and buildings, Copeland Oaks, the Carnation Mall, and various churches and public school projects.   Ed, a staunch union supporter, served for several years as a Union Steward for both the Akron and Youngstown districts.  In 2018, he was honored with a 65 year membership in the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the U.S. and Canada.  At home, he and Evelyn raised 6 children in the house they built on Wayland Road.  Ed was involved in Deerfield community activities, coaching Hot Stove Baseball teams for his 4 sons and participating, often as an officer, in the local Ruritan Club.  He became an avid golfer (admiring Arnie and Jack) and could be found at Paradise Lakes, league golfing on Friday evenings with his sons and friends.  Ed was thrilled that he was able to play courses throughout the country, often with a son or two.  Those included Firestone, Canterbury and even a short walk on a hole at Pebble Beach.  He loved sports of all kinds and was a passionate, critical, yet always hopeful fan of the Indians, the Browns and the Cavs.   In later years, as he skimmed through the cable offerings, he would watch any sports broadcast he could find.  Ed is survived by his devoted and loving wife. Evelyn.  They were about to celebrate their 73rd wedding anniversary.  He also leaves his daughter, Diantha (David, dec.) Hilker; son Edward Jr.; daughter Jayne (Bob)Crites, with whom Ed and Evelyn have spent the last 4 years; son Jim (Kim), son Jeff (Bernadette),  son David (Kris) and a favorite nephew, Jerry (Brenda)Henderson.  Ed and Evelyn are the grandparents of 14 and great-grandparents of 18.  Calling hours will be at the Shorts/Spicer/Crislip Funeral home in Ravenna from 11am to 1pm on Friday, May 28th, followed by a small private ceremony for the immediate family at the Deerfield Cemetery.  The family would like to extend a special thanks to Lisa and Keiara of Attentive Home Health Services; Dr. Nathan Lucardi of Kent; and the staff of Avenue at Aurora with special thank you’s to administrator Karen Stahlman and nurse Lisa, whose wisdom and compassion were such a comfort.
