Frieda E. (Schischka) Ostendorf

December 12, 1914 — March 21, 2012

Frieda E. Ostendorf of Ravenna, died Wednesday, March 21 at Robinson Memorial Hospital following a short illness. Mrs. Ostendorf a retired realtor was born Dec. 12, 1914 in Einbeck, Germany. She emigrated to Indiana, in 1925 with her parents Albert and Elizabeth Schischka and brothers Albert and Gerhardt. A brother Ernest remained in Einbeck and a sister Lottie was born in the United States. All are deceased. Frieda graduated from high school in Hammond, Indiana where she met the love of her life, Robert Ostendorf at a German dance. It was "love at first sight" and they married September 24, 1937. Bob and Frieda celebrated 61 years of marriage prior to his death March 31,1998. Frieda and Bob moved to Ravenna in 1947 when he was transferred with the Evenflo Rubber Company. She worked as a realtor in Ravenna 35 years for Dewey Gatts Realty &Schneider Realty. She was a member of the Women's Republican Club, Eastern Star Chapter #46, Society of the Blind, and Ravenna Sorosis. Frieda was an avid reader until her eyesight failed and then she continued to read with books on tape. She loved to play cards and for many years belonged to two bridge clubs and a 500 card club. Mrs. Ostendorf was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church for 63 years and served on many and various committees but enjoyed most the Building Committee and the Property Committee. She was a member of Miriam Circle and WELCA. Frieda is survived by a sister-in-law Barbara Ostendorf of Needham, Mass., nephews, August Schischka of Griffith, Indiana, Richard Ashby of Alabama, and Ewald Jaskolski of California and many friends. Services will be at 11 :00 A.M. Thursday, March 29, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 170 N. Freedom St. with the Rev. Daniel Caruso Jr. officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna following the church service. Arrangements have been entrusted to Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or the Ravenna Society of the Blind.
