WWII Veteran, George Paul “Uncle” Dunckel 95 passed away Thursday, November 10, 2016. He was born in Upper Jay, NY on April 9, 1921 in a Methodist Parsonage to the Reverend Roy and Florence (Randall) Dunckel. Throughout the 20’s and 30’s, Methodist Ministers moved every three to five years. As a child, George Dunckel resided in the following NY cities and villages: Central Bridge, Richmondville, Hartford, Luzerne, Chazy, Gallupville and Albany. After marrying Virginia, the two lived in Albany and Schenectady, NY.
George married Virginia Cole Dunckel on September 6, 1941. They resided in Albany and Schenectady, NY before moving to Ravenna in 1957.
During his tenure as a member of the United Methodist Churches, George served on most committees and was active in the United Methodist Men’s Club. He was also active in many Ravenna organizations through the years, including: The Chamber of Commerce, Board Member of the City Health Department, Boy’s Club and Athletic Boosters. He was a member of the KSU R.O.R. Club, Rotary Club, Vice Commander of the American Legion, and helped organize the Portage County Seven Step Program. He was also an inactive 60 year member of the Schenectady Masonic Lodge #1174 F. & A.M. While in the Army, George served in Italy, France and Germany.
George’s 75 year career included work as a church custodian and employment with: A&P Tea, Deco Restaurant, A.B. Dick, F.W. Woolworth, Howards Office Equipment, The Miller Company, Keystone Envelope, Waller-Duman, Guster-Dunckel & Light, Inc., Goodwill, Quaker Oats, and Beckley Cardy, Inc. He retired in 2013 as an independent agent for Dunckel Distributing. George was a partner in the Dunckel & Wicks Partnership since 1977.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia, and son George Henry “Hank” Dunckel, as well as nieces and nephews in 8 states. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his eldest son, Captain Roy Stephen Dunckel, Tyler, Texas; sisters Elizabeth (Betty) Butts, Alexandria, VA, Ruth Semple, Albany, NY and brother Ervin Dunckel, Payson, AZ.
Memorial calling hours will be from 2 PM until time of memorial service at 3 PM Sunday, November 20, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Ravenna. Military honors will begin the service followed by Pastor J.P. Snyder and Reverend Tom Poremba. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Senior High Youth Ministries at the First United Methodist Church, 263 S. Prospect Street, Ravenna, OH.
George chose to bequeath his body to Northeast Ohio University’s College of Medicine in Rootstown, Ohio. An interment service will be held at a later date at Fort Plain City Cemetery in Fort Plain, New York. Memorial service arrangements entrusted to Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel.
