Helen J. (Anderson) Gilbert
July 12, 1925 — August 23, 2015
Helen J (Anderson) Gilbert, 90, of Rootstown, died Sunday August 23, 2015 at Akron City Hospital. She was born July 12, 1925 in Homer Twp. in Morgan County to the late Wendell C. and Alice W. (Smith) Hall.
Helen has lived in Rootstown since 1956 and attended various schools while growing up. She graduated from high school in Mantua, OH. After graduation she attended St. Thomas School of Nursing in Akron. She graduated in September of 1947. She spent her entire nursing career at St. Thomas Hospital in the Labor and Delivery department and delivered more babies that you can count. She retired in 1983 after many years of service.
Helen married her high school sweetheart and love of her life Kenneth Gilbert on March 26, 1995. They enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. He passed away in 2003.
She enjoyed reading and could often be found with a book in her hands. She would start planning what she was going to put in her flower garden long before the snow had melted. She also enjoyed feeding and watching all the birds, squirrels and deer come to her feeders. Most recently she had been watching the hummingbirds. She enjoyed telling everyone that came about how many she had seen and what color they were. Helen loved receiving cards and notes from her family- members and then sharing the news of what their families were doing. She really loved the pictures that were included with these letters. She loved her grandchildren and her great grandchildren and was always telling others how proud she was of her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her brother Charles F. Hall. She is survived by her children Rick (Beverly) Anderson of SC,Mary Kay (Dave) Hluch of Rootstown, Martha (Whitney) Hines of SC. Her brother Wendell C. Hall Jr. of FL., grandchildren; Jason Anderson, Neil Anderson, Monica Lappe and Gretchen Hill and her great grandchildren who she loved to much, Jacy Anderson, Cooper Lappe, Camryn Lappe, Peter Hill and Madelaine Hill. She will be sorely missed by her two loving cats who were her constant
companions.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 12 noon at the Shorts-Spicer-Crislip Funeral Home in Ravenna with Rev. John Parker officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Portage County APL or Happy Trails in Ravenna.
