Herb Schoning, 76, of Ravenna, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2012 at Robinson Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was born on November 9, 1935 in Ravenna to the late, Joseph Leon and Freeda (Pemberton) Schoning. He was a veteran serving in the navy during the Korean War. Herb was a math teacher at Maple wood Career Center for the Adult Basic and Literacy Education Program (ABLE). He was also a member of the Ravenna VFW Post #1055 and the Portage County Literacy Coalition. Herb is survived by his wife of almost 10 years, Doris (Gaster) Schoning of Ravenna; sons, Herbert Schoning of Columbus, Jeffrey (Jenny) Schoning of Columbus and Mark Schoning of South Carolina; step daughter, Sharon Hull of California; five grandchildren; sister, Barbara (Irvin) Miner of Stow; and cousin, Karen Hazlette of Ravenna. In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Schoning. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
