Homer Jr. Taliaferro, 81, passed away on May 4, 2011 at Hickory Ridge Health Care. Born June 2, 1929, Homer was a life-long resident of Ravenna. He graduated from Ravenna Township High School in 1947, where he had been the captain and quarterback of the football team all four years. He then joined the U.S. Army and served proudly during the Korean War in the 11th Airborne. He loved the camaraderie of friends at the Moose, Eagles, V.F.W., and the American Legion. He retired from Gougler Machine, worked many part-time jobs (for fun). He loved his fishing trips to Canada for more than 50 years and was an avid gardener. He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Gloria, his father and mother, Homer W. and Vallie Taliaferro, brothers, Ray, Jack, Harold, and Dale. He is survived by a brother Ronald, step-son, David (Karole) Heisler of Medina, daughter, Jeannie (Bruce) Canter of St. Petersburg, FL, son, Daniel (Dawn) Taliaferro of Sand Lake, MI, and 7 grandchildren. Visiting hours will be on Friday May 6 from 5 – 8 PM and the funeral, officiated by Rev. Nancy Dunn, on May 7 at 11 AM at Shorts-Spicer-Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna, where Military Honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army and the Akron Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division.
