Joan J. (DiPaola) Barnes, 99, of Ravenna passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014. She was born October 5, 1914 in Peninsula, Ohio to Salvatore and Fortunata (Spinnicchia) DiPaola. Joan was a life long member of Immaculate Conception Church. She is survived by her son, William A. Barnes of Ravenna, grandchildren, Karen (Dennis) Kurtz and Vincent Barnes of Ravenna and Anita (Pete) Calleri of Akron. She also leaves behind her great grandchildren, Kallen and Evan Kurtz, PJ, Anthony, and Dominick Calleri and Lauren Barnes. Mrs. Barnes also leaves behind her sister-in-law Mrs. Helen (Carl) DiPaola, 17 nieces and nephews, and 25 great nieces and nephews, and 22 great-great nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her parents Salvatore and Fortunata DiPaola, her brothers and sisters-in-law Jim (Nellie) DiPaola, Tony DiPaola, Paul (Agnes) DiPaola, Sam P. (Ruth) DiPaola, Carl DiPaola and Joseph (Shirley) DiPaola and her sisters and brothers-in-law, Katherine DiPaola, Lucy (Edwin) Ward, Mary Carmel DiPaola, Judy (Robert) Hansen and Frances DiPaola. Mrs. Barnes was a cashier at the Acme store at its original site across from the courthouse and then the new store on West Main Street. She worked at the Acme for over 35 years. She had also been a member of The Ravenna Community Choir. She loved to travel. Her favorite destination was Hawaii where she and her sister Lucy visited for 2 weeks. She loved visiting relatives in Florida, New Jersey and Kansas. Joan also traveled to Italy. A private service and entombment was held July 29, 2014 at St. Mary Cemetery Chapel with Father William Kraynak officiating. The family would like to thank Stephanie Damicone and her staff for the wonderful service provided to Joan and for always treating her as family, to the Woodlands and staff for the excellent care she received over the last two years of her life and to the Robinson Memorial Visiting Nurse and Hospice. Arrangements were entrusted to Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel.
