John Harcourt Miles Jr. 86 of Ravenna passed away Friday, October 1, 2010 at
Robinson Memorial Hospital
. He was born July 1, 1924 in Akron to the late John Harcourt Miles Sr. and Bertha L. (Morgan) Miles. He spent all but 10 years of
his life in Ravenna. John graduated from R.H.S and enlisted in the U.S.Navy in 1942. He served aboard the Destroyer Escort Ship U.S.S. Marts-DE-I74 for 20 months on convoy escort duty in the Atlantic and
South Atlantic Ocean. John
served the remainder of his enlistment at
Subic Bay
, Philippine Islands attached to the torpedo station. He was Honorably discharged after 39 months active service as torpedo mans mate second class,TM 2/c U.S.N. John spent
approximently 35 years of his working life working on a drawing board at Vaughn Machinery Company in
Cuyahoga Falls designing steel mill
equipment for drawing rod, wire, and tubing. At the time of his retirement, at the age of 59, he was
employed at the Wean United Corp. of Youngstown as a project designer. In the course of his work he held several U.S. Patents. Four years later, in 1988 he went to work for the grounds crew at
Windmill Lakes golf course
. He was affiliated with
Grace Episcopal Church
and as a Lifelong member of Ravenna Elks. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Louise (Schriner) miles, daughter,
Cynthia Anne Johnston
and her fiancée Scott Bradford of
Silver Lake
, son, John H. (Deborah) Miles III of Brady Lake, grandsons, Jeffrey Harcourt Miles, Ryan Morgan Miles both of Stow, sister-in-laws, Betty O'Brien and Alice Ross both of Kent, and many nieces, nephews. He will be missed by many golf friends, Elks brothers and sisters, and all the ladies at
Giant Eagle
. Beside his parents he was preceded in death by sister Ann Marie Layfield. Calling hours will be held from
1 - 3 PM Sunday, October 3, 2010
at the Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel. Funeral Service will be held at
11:00 AM Monday, October 4, 2010
at Grace Episcopal Church,
250 W. Cedar Street Ravenna, Ohio
, with Rev. Carol Evans officiating. Burial will be in
Maple Grove Cemetery
following the service. In Lieu of flowers donation can be made to the
