Mr. Joseph Dean Foster, 89, of Charlestown, formerly of Bakerton, PA, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2020 after a period of declining health. Growing up in Bakerton he acquired the nickname "Satch". His family called him Dean and Ohioans knew him as Joe. When his children were young they couldn't figure out what his name was. Mr. Foster served in the Army during the Korean War, where he learned heavy equipment operation. Throughout his life he worked in a variety of jobs, usually two at a time, including a start in the coal mines at a very young age. He retired from the custodial department at Streetsboro City Schools. He was known in his neighborhood for his garden and for mountain pie parties. In his retirement years he restored Model A's and became very active in several dancing groups. Mr. Foster was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years Louise (Miller) in 1996, his close friend and dancing partner Terry Zinc in 2014, his parents Raymond and Sarah, siblings Gilbert Natcher, Jack Foster, Betty Greenland and Eileen Wright. Survivors include his children Susan of Cortland, Wally (Lynn) of Shalersville, Bill (Julie) of Diamond and Anne (Larry) Wise of Ravenna. grandchildren Rev. Janine (Brad) Shearer of Ohio City, Eric Foster of Florida, Carol Foster , Isaac Foster and Ian Deffenbaugh of Diamond, twin sister Lorraine Deyarmin and Charmaine Stevens of Altoona, PA and many close friends, nieces and nephews. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel.
