Karen Mae Mellin, 71 of Rootstown passed away at her residence on Sunday April 12th surrounded by her family. She was born June 12, 1943 in Fairmont, West Virginia the fifth of twelve children to the late Lawrence and Arma (Vincent) Hinzman.
At a young age, she delivered newspapers for the Warren tribune and earned a trip to Cleveland Stadium for her efforts. She graduated from Braceville High School in 1961 where she was a pitcher for the Softball team, played clarinet in the band, starred in the school plays and sang with her sisters.
Karen was past president of the Portage County Realtors and owned Karen Mellin Realty before associating with Jack Kohl Realty. She was active in Rootstown girls’ softball and over the years coached both girls’ softball and boy’s baseball teams. Karen also enjoyed bowling and traveling.
In addition to her parents, Karen was preceded in death by her brother Dale Hinzman and her special friend Denny Oles.
Karen is survived by her 2 sons, Timothy and Todd Mellin of Rootstown; grandchildren Dakota Mellin and Christian (Bernie) Stuttler; great-grandson Nikolai Stuttler; sisters, Melva Heyd and Marcella Ash both of Garrettsville, Colleen (Larry) Dezort and Debbie (Darwin) Friend both of Ravenna and Marsha (Dick) Dean of Freedom Twp.; brothers, Alan (Marilou) Hinzman, Delvin (Jean) Hinzman, Randy (Bonnie) Hinzman all of West Virginia, Larry (Sheila) Hinzman of Ravenna, and Denny (Mona) Hinzman of Garretsville. She also leaves behind her favorite Aunt Dorothy Vincent and Cousin Eddie (Diane) Vincent of West Virginia, numerous nieces and nephews, her first husband, Frances (Butch) Mellin and her special buddy, her chocolate lab Heath.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 6:00 PM at the Shorts-Spicer-Crislip Funeral Home in Ravenna with Pastor Scott Hindel officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4:00 PM until the time of the service.
