Larry D. Elam peacefully passed away at home, with his family, in his recliner, Wednesday, November 9, 2011 following a courageous battle with heart and lung disease. Born in Martin, Kentucky he was the first born son to Russell and Mary (Crisp) Elam. Larry attended Streetsboro High School where he met and married his sweetheart Sue (Chabra) Elam. They were married July 16, 1968 and had 3 beloved children, Laurie (Derek) Adams, Jon (Jennifer, Lynn) Elam, and Mindy (Ira) Clark.
As a teen, Larry worked with his father at their Gulf gas station and eventually they opened Elam’s Auto Parts where he worked with his brother Rusty (Barb) Elam, and sister, Sheila (Jim) Davis for 24 years until he followed in his fathers’ footsteps and opened his own store, Larry’s Automotive MedCenter in Rootstown. Larry continued to be very involved in the community and was loved for being a coach, mentor and friend to area youth. He gave of his talent for fixing cars by teaching at Career Day at area high schools. He was especially excited to see all his dear friends recently while attending his 40th high school class reunion.
Larry enjoyed life and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren Devin, Ashley, and Brittany (Adams), Jonathan, Jacob, Kyle and Shelby (Elam) and Erin, Nikki and Kristen (Clark). They loved spending time together planning trips to go fishing on the boat or camping. He was also a favorite uncle to Kim (Odin) Isum, and their children Phillip and Seth, and Shandra Edwards, and her children Jasmin, Mariah, Ty’rese and Isaiah. Shawn and Jesse Russell (JR) Elam. Not only family but friend to cousins Tommy and Jimmy Elam, enjoyed fishing and camping with Louis (Foxie) Fox.
Larry attended Faith Baptist Church in Streetsboro. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Ashley and father Russell. Memorial Services will be held Friday, November 18 at 4:00 PM at Shorts-Spicer-Crislip Funeral Home in Streetsboro with Pastor Don Workman officiating. A reception for family and friends to be held at the American Legion on Aurora Hudson Road immediately following service.
