Phyllis "Gene" Moore passed away peacefully and with dignity in her home on October 31, 2015, at the age of 73 following a four year battle with Lewy Body Dementia Disease. She was born on November 13, 1941, in Kent to Gilbert and Mona (Chalker) Griggy. She attended Saint Patrick Catholic School from first through eighth grade and then graduated from Kent State University High School in 1959 where she was the homecoming queen and head majorette her senior year. Growing up in Kent, she was the fifth of ten children in her family. She met her husband, David, in May, 1963. They were married on July 11, 1964, and last year celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends at a surprise gathering at Northeast Ohio Medical University. Gene was a secretary at Gougler Industries for 25 years;retiring in 2000. She was active in her Kent State University High School class reunions throughout the years. She was a member of St. Peter of the Fields Church in Rootstown, a Eucharistic minister, led the rosary on many occasions, and was a Franciscan- 3rd Order (Stigmata of St. Francis Fraternity). Gene was a beautiful person inside and out. She was full of energy and had abundant faith in God, always placing the needs of others before her own. She was a prayerful, compassionate, nurturing,and loving mother, wife, sister, and friend. Being a grandmother to her grandchildren was her greatest passion. She is remembered fondly for her love of gathering together with her family for back-to-school parties, autumn hayrides, Sunday meals, and special Christmas parties which included leading her grandchildren from youngest to oldest in costumes and Christmas songs and music to celebrate the Lord's birth. Some of her other favorite pastimes included going to events that her grandchildren were involved in such as baseball, basketball, volleyball, and football games, dance programs, school plays, talent shows, and wrestling matches. She will be sadly missed by her husband, David G. Moore,Sr.; her two daughters, Karry (Mike) McGrath of Rootstown and Kelly (Mark)Wucinich of Hartville; her son David, Jr., (Krissy)Moore of Rootstown; grandchildren Joshua and Matthew McGrath; Jacob, Gregory, Abigail and Katelyn Moore; and Mark Jr. and Grace Wucinich; sisters Jo Ann Knapp of Kent, OH; Marilyn Briner of Mogadore, OH; Sally Trautman of Kent, OH; Nancy (Jerry) Knapp of Louisville, OH; and Pati Callan of Fair Oaks, CA; brothers Brian (Linda) Griggy of Green, OH; and Chuck (Sheryl) Griggy of Bradenton, FL; sister-in-law Portia Griggy of Tucson, AZ; mother-in-law Isabel Moore of Rootstown, OH; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Mona Griggy; father, Gilbert Griggy; grandson, Michael Jude McGrath,Jr.; sister, Judy Lampasone; and brother, Tom Griggy. Calling hours will be from 5 – 8 PM Tuesday, November 3, 2015 and from 10 AM until time of Mass of Christian burial at 11 AM Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at St. Peter of the Fields Church in Rootstown. Burial will follow in St. Peter of the Fields Cemetery. Special thanks to all of the family and friends who offered prayers and prayed the rosary for Gene, sent cards and lit candles, prepared and brought meals to Gene and her family during her suffering, and kept vigil by Gene's side at her home; especially her sisters Sally, Nancy, Jo Ann, and Pati,and family friends Bertie Holler, Gerrie Huth, and Janeen Skipper. Also, thanks to the hospice program of Akron General Visiting Nurse Service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Akron Children's Hospital Foundation, 215 West Bowery Street, Akron, OH 44308 or St. Peter of the Fields Church "Building Fund", 3487 Old Forge Road, Rootstown, OH 44272.
