Robert Raymond Doak, age 94, of Ravenna, died at home on March 9, 2016, following a brief period of declining health.
Bob, as he was known to family and friends, was the eldest son of the late Raymond and Carrie Doak. He was born May 27, 1921 in Ravenna, Ohio.
Bob was a graduate of Ravenna Township High School (Class of 1940) and answered his country's call to service in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the beginning of World War II. During his tenure, he served as a staff sergeant and turret gunner instructor in various B-24 bomber squadrons. Bob married Charlene Sollberger while on active duty, and they made their home at various Air Corps bases until Bob's honorable discharge at the end of WWII. Bob and Charlene then returned to Ravenna where they lived, worked and raised their family.
Bob was employed at Duracote Corporation in Ravenna, and also worked alongside his father, Raymond, in the family's pump repair and plumbing business for many years. Following retirement, he enjoyed "keeping busy" as a maintenance man at the University Inn in Kent. He was a life-long member of the First Christian Church of Ravenna, where he served as an elder and chaired various committees. He was a former district chairman of the Ravenna Lions Club and a poll worker for the Board of Elections. Bob was an aviation enthusiast and enjoyed frequent pleasure flights with his son, David, who is an accomplished private pilot.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife Charlene Doak in 1986, his sister Mary (Doak) McDaniel, brothers Edward Doak, Donald Doak, and Richard Doak. He is survived by his daughter, Janice (Ed) Zapka of Daytona Beach, Fl.; son David (Linda) Doak of Ravenna; son Mike (Roberta) Doak of Carrollton; brother-in-law Carl McDaniel of Ravenna; grandchildren Sharon Wolfe, Denise Onago, Megan Gerbracht, Amanda Casto, Ben Doak, and Carrie Doak; seven great grandchildren; one great, great granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating Bob's life will be led by Rev. Laurie Metzko at the First Christian Church of Ravenna on Monday, March 14, 2016 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive guests during visiting hours from 2:00- 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Sunday, March 13, 2016, at the Shorts-Spicer - Crislip Funeral Home in Ravenna. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make memorial contributions to the First Christian Church, 420 South Prospect St., Ravenna, OH. 44266.
