Rose M. (Winkelman) Friend

March 18, 1922 — October 16, 2020

My times are in my Father's hand; How could I wish or ask for more? For he who has my pathway planned, Will guide me till my journey's o'er. - Fraser

The daughter of Myrtle (Richmond) Winkleman and daughter of William Winkleman, Rose Marie Winkelman was born in Ravenna, Ohio on March 18, 1922. The family, however, settled in Blackhorse, Ohio where Rose would attend public school graduating from Ravenna Township High School in 1940. During her high school days, Rose took an active interest in sports and drama club, but after graduation she sought employment with the Twin Coach Corporation of Kent, Ohio where she helped build C-47 transport airplanes during World War II. Following graduation, Rose continued with her interest in community roller skating at the Ravenna fair grounds outdoor rollerink. It was here that our own Rosie the Riveter met a hot shot semi-pro roller skate performer by the name of Miles (M.E.) Friend who would sweep her off her skate wheels and become her husband in 1942. The marriage would produce two loving sons, Miles "Tyke" Friend and the late Jerred "Jerry" Friend who both benefited from her love and concern for many years and the support she gave to the projects her boys undertook throughout their school years - "Mom and Dad were always there for sporting events and cultural events alike." And Rose's SAAB Taxi Service was always available for any young athlete who needed a left to the practice field. She is survived by her son Miles Tyke (Sharron), her grandkids Heidi and Tyler, her nephew Darwin Friend Jr,. and special friends Sally Roberts and Joyce Klossner. Rose will be greatly missed by family and friends who live on to remember her as she departs to join loved ones who have gone before which include her loving parents previously mentioned; her sister Mrs. Lawrence (Mary) Shaw and her family; sister-in-law Frances (Loren) Friend and family; twin sisters-in-law Jane and Joan and families; her brother-in-law Jack Friend and family; sister-in-law Hope (Friend) Johnson and brother-in-law Darwin Friend and many others who were privileged to have known her. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, all expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Happy Trials or Rose's Rescue. The family would like to thank the Home Instead healthcare givers. Family and friends may gather at the Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel on Saturday, October 24, 2020 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM with a 12:30 PM graveside service at the Maplegrove Cemetery Ravenna, Ohio. Condolences and memories of Rose can be shared with her family at www.sscfuneralhomes.com.
