Roy Edward Riggar Sr., 84, died Saturday, March 25, 2017, at UH Portage Medical Center in Ravenna. He was born May 13, 1932, to William R. Riggar and Fannie E. Swaney at Georges Township, (Fayette County) Pennsylvania. Mr. Riggar graduated on May 25, 1950, from Georges Township High School in York Run, Pa. He served with United States Army during the Korean War and was stationed at Fort Polk, La., where he was a sharpshooter, before being honorably discharged in 1954 at the rank of sergeant. Mr. Riggar worked at Metzler's Department Store in Uniontown, Pa., and was a member of the United Steel Workers of America prior to joining the Army. He worked briefly as a security guard and at a Cleveland-area funeral home and spent many years as a member of Teamsters Local No. 24 in Akron, working on the docks at area trucking companies, most notably Pacific Intermountain Express (P.I.E). Mr. Riggar was the devoted husband of Karen Lee (Welch) Riggar for 42 years. They were married on April 5, 1968, and she died on Jan. 11, 2011. His family includes his children, Debbie and the late Blair Galasky, the late Brenda Zgrabik, Roy and Debbie Riggar Jr., Laura and Dave Nethken and the late Patricia Riggar, along with seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Riggar was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
