Samuel R. Garro

June 12, 1940 — July 24, 2011

"And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years."  Samuel R. Garro, 71, of Ravenna, Ohio died peacefully July 24, 2011 at the Cleveland Clinic surrounded by his family.

He was born June 12, 1940 in Ravenna, Ohio to Nunzio and Marie (Rizzo) Garro.  Sam was known to have said "It's great to be Sam Garro."  He started as a gas station attendant at Frank's Sohio, eventually working two jobs including Ohio Edison for 12 years to support his young family.  He married his high school sweetheart, Charlotte (Shambach) Garro and in May of 2011 they celebrated a love that has lasted 50 years.  Sam attended school and became a draftsman.  He was president of Umbaugh Pole Builders and later retired from Ace Rubber, where he worked with his only brother, Charles Garro.

He was content to spend his life in his hometown.  His parents and family were the center of his life, and throughout the years had cultivated lifelong friends and had a charisma that was impossible to resist.

Whether riding his Harley, playing cards at the Ravenna Elks, sitting at a car show with his vette, making ravioli for Christmas eve with the men of the family for over 30 people, playing bocce at the Italian American Club or having coffee with his mother and brother, he enjoyed and was passionate about living each day.

Sam leaves his wife Charlotte, his daughters Christine (Dennis) DeLuke of Kent, Lisa (Joe) Ferrell of Ravenna, his grandchildren Justin (Jessica), Jaime (Kyle), Jennifer, Joe, Jacob, Olivia, his great grand-daughters Jaden and Harper.  He also leaves his mother, Marie Garro, brother Charles (Becky) Garro and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father Nunzio "Chet" Garro with whom he was blessed to spend most of his life.  Also preceding him in death were his grandsons Joshua and Jason.
