Sylvia H. Eldridge 81 of Rootstown died Sunday, March 6, 2016. She was born May 20, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Orville and Ethel (Trimble) Calhoun. Sylvia was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron and the Order of the Eastern Star in Ravenna. She organized the yearly Marks Avenue neighborhood dinners and would take up collections for the cancer society and heart association every year. A 1951 graduate of Alliance High School, where she was the valedictorian and received a scholarship to Kent State University, she began her life's path at Kent State and finished at Kent State as an assistant archivist on the 12th floor of the library. In between this position she trained as a x-ray technician and medical secretary then worked for 15 years for two specialist Dr. Krause (Orthopedic) and Dr. Kietz (Urologist). She retired from Kent State after 23 years of service. She also worked for 4 years for the Rootstown Schools. Survivors include her husband of 61 years Ernest Eldridge, daughter Deanna "Dee" (John) Webb of Ravenna, son Lindy Eldridge of Rootstown, granddaughter Stephanie Dickson, step grandchildren Travis and Jared Webb and cousin Kathy Long of N. Canton. Calling hours will be from 6 - 8 PM Today, March 10, 2016 at Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel. Eastern Star services will be at 7:30 PM Tonight. Funeral services will be at 11 AM Friday, March 11, 2016 at the funeral home with Bill Wisniewski and Pastor David Nevergall officiating. Burial will follow in Homeland Cemetery in Rootstown.
