Alfred L. "Al" Montigney, Sr.

Alfred L. "Al" Montigney, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 12, 2015 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio. Al was born in Ravenna 92 years ago on June 13, 1923, to Edward and Hallie (Skelly) Montigney.
Al was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Ravenna American Legion, Ravenna Masonic Lodge and Ravenna Elks Lodge. He is survived by Sarah B. Montigney, his loving wife of 49 years, the children he cherished: daughter Sheryl Langell of Rootstown, Nicole (Jason) Sudbrink of Green, Deborah (Jeff) Rice of Ravenna, Cheryl (Bob) Luli of Rootstown and Denise (Victor) Vigluicci of Rootstown; sons Alfred Jr. of Hudson and Danny (Mary) Leader of Kent; and the 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren he adored, all of whom will miss him greatly.
Al was an employee and eventually an owner and operator of Montigney Hardware Store in Ravenna which was founded by his father Edward and uncle Bill in 1937. From the age of 14 until he was 91, Al devoted his time and talents to the store. His friendly manner and love of people made him both a successful businessman and a joy to his family and many friends. He never met a stranger. Al was very knowledgeable about the many products sold in the hardware store and assisted countless customers over the years with their repairs and projects. Al loved animals, and he was an avid fisherman and enjoyed local fishing holes and charter fishing trips on Lake Erie.
Al's family will have a private celebration of his life, and burial in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna. Memorials in Al's name may be made to the Portage County Animal Protective League, PO Box 927, Ravenna, OH 44266 or to the Robinson Memorial Hospital Hospice Program, 6847 N. Chestnut Street, Ravenna, OH 44266. Arrangements have been entrusted to Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel.
