David E. Newman born March 18, 1933 to Harry & Rhua (Ritter) Newman left this earth Nov 14, 2021. His parents and siblings (Lucy Maddern Pfenniger, Alice Spellman, Esther Fitzsimons, Grace Manfrass, Harold Newman, Dorothy Williams, John Newman & Florence Basel preceded him in death. He lived in the Streetsboro and Kent area until enlisting in the U.S. Army shortly after graduating from Kent State High School.
While stationed in Germany, Dave enjoyed traveling and adapted to living far from “home”. Following his military service, David moved to California working for several large telecommunications companies such as Western Electric and Pacific Telephone & Telegraph. Years later, it was quite evident in conversation that he enjoyed his work. Vacations were often spent sightseeing the Pacific coast states and other popular tourist destinations like Reno, Tahoe, the Grand Canyon and national parks in Utah. Visits to Ohio to see family were sprinkled in.
The final journey home came many years later at age 80, driving by himself cross country first to Florida then to Virginia and finally on to Ohio, visiting family along the way. He landed at his nephew Roy’s home in Tallmadge staying long enough to find a place he was comfortable calling home. That place was Kent.
He never quite lost his California style… still wearing sandals on Sept 28 when he was admitted to the hospital. Dave will be missed but remembered by his many nieces and nephews for his fiercely independent spirit, his engineering/inquisitive mind and his strong desire to live life on his terms. In honoring David's request, cremation has taken place. Memorial Calling hours will be Thursday December 2, 2021 from 12 Noon to 1:30 PM at Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Homes Streetsboro Chapel. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery Streetsboro, Ohio. Condolences and memories of David may be shared with his family at www.sscfuneralhomes.com.
